Period 1

before i fall
By Lauren Oliver

****
I gave this book 4 stars because as I was reading it I kept thinking about what was going to happen next. I wasn't able to put the book down for 1 minute!

Setting:
Connecticut is the state in which all four girls, Sam, Ally, Elody, and Lindsay, are from.

Main Characters:
The main characters are Samantha Kingston, Lindsay Edgecombe, Eldoy, and Ally.

About Samantha Kingston:
Sam is one of the first characters that comes first in this book. She is popular, has a crush-worthy boyfriend, and three amazing friends-Lindsay, Elody, and Ally.

About Lindsay Edgecombe:
Lindsay is Sam's best friend, who would do anything for her. She's kept all her secrets and even though she does things that she shouldn't be doing without getting caught, she is still a trust-worthy friend to Sam, Eldoy, and Ally.

About The Book:
  • In the beginning of the story Sam is explaining about what she thinks about before she dies. She doesn't even think about her friends or her boyfriend. Instead, she thinks about some girl who she used to bully with her friend Lindsay.
  • Her friends come in later and Sam kind of explains each of them and what they are and how they met.
  • Sam wakes up in her dreams and has the same dream again but it turns out a little differently each time.
Recommendations:
I would recommend this book to anyone who is 13+. I also recommend it for people who like high school drama and relationship disasters.

pop

Blog Jason Tester
Image result for pop by gordon korman

Rating ****POP goes beyond being a good read for sports fans. Yes, there's a lot of football action -- the team deals with their conflicts while trying to remain undefeated for a second straight season -- but the action is nothing compared to the page-turning drama of Charlie and his secret.

Setting- Marcus, the new kid in town, wants to tryout for the undefeated high school football team in Pop, by Gordon Korman. While training by himself at a local park, he meets Charlie, a massive 50-something-year-old man with powerful football skills that he shares with Marcus. Estranged from the teammates who don’t want to accept an outsider, Marcus’s growing friendship with Charlie gives him a sense of belonging. But Marcus also begins to see that something about Charlie isn’t quite right. For an old guy, he’s a charismatic prankster who acts like a big kid, can’t remember Marcus’s name and runs away at the first sign of trouble. Then Marcus discovers that Charlie is actually a former NFL linebacker known as “The King of Pop.”When Marcus moves to a new town in the dead of summer, he doesn't know a soul. While practicing football for impending tryouts, he strikes up an unlikely friendship with an older man. Charlie is a charismatic prankster—and the best football player Marcus has ever seen. He can't believe his good luck when he finds out that Charlie is actually Charlie Popovich, or "the King of Pop," as he had been nicknamed during his career as an NFL linebacker. But that's not all. There is a secret about Charlie that his family is desperate to hide.

Main Character- Marcus, is new in a town where the high school football team is legendary
Main plot events- Pop is an engaging, worthwhile, and touching read. Concussion-induced Alzheimer’s is central to the story, as main character Charlie, a fifty-four-year-old former NFL player suffers severe memory loss and confusion as a result of too many head injuries from football. The relationship between Charlie and Marcus is an unlikely and special one. Marcus takes Charlie on a trip against the wishes of Charlie’s family by lying and sneaking off, and Marcus gets in trouble with the law on several occasions. Underage drinking, a destructive and unsupervised teen party, and boy/girl drama amount to relatively normal teen behavior. It should be noted that this story ends tragically when Charlie falls to his death.

Recommendation- I would recommend this book if you like adventures and football NFL. I liked the book a lot.

Stuck In Neutral

by Terry Truman

I would rate this book 3 out of 5 stars because it really didn't appeal much to me

Setting: Stuck in neutral takes place in seattle Washington, It usually varies from shawns home to the hospital.

Main Character: The main character in this book is a fourteen year old boy named Shawn McDaniel,  Shawn was born with a rare condition known as cerebral palsy, this makes it so that shawn is not allowed to control any of the muscles in his body, but his brain is fully functional

Main Plot Events: This book shows the point of view of shawn, while his brain is fully functional none of the rest of him is, and since there is no way for him to communicate, everyone thinks that shawn is braindead, but he actually is able to completely retain all memories and things that he has heard. he is even convinced that his own father is going to kill him out of love for him.

Main Conflict: the main conflict of this book is how shawn lives his life with cerebral palsy and how he copes with not being able to communicate, he is faced with many challenges that he can only think about to overcome.

I would recommend this book for anyone who likes humor, this book is very humorous with all of the thoughts going through this kids head.

The long walk

By Stephen King

Five stars: *****

settings:

The setting takes place basically through the united states. walking the whole time and visiting a lot of cities.

Main Characters:

Ray is very athletic and does most school sports. Peter is very quiet and doesn't make a lot of friends other than Ray while hes walking. Stebbins is the most mysterious of them all and he tell quite a bit about his past through the book.

main plot events:

At the beginning of the story a boy named Ray is really stoked about joining the long walk he is the only one of his friends that had joined the long walk. the long walk is a game that is played once a year and it involves 100 teens to play. they basically walk for their lives. the last one revives a big reward. about halfway through the book ray is told a story by his new friend peter. he says that the last person to complete the long walk was cheered on once he won and he didn't make any reactions to what was around him. he just looked at the kid that he was contesting by and laid on him and started to cry. winning the long walk was not as good as he thought it would be. By then only 45 of the 100 people had died. Witch sucked for Ray because he had a lot more to walk.

Conflicts:

During the long walk Rays shoes started to fall apart and he becomes partially barefoot. Than he starts burning us and feels dizzy because he really wanted to.

Recommendation:

i would recommend this book to whoever likes excitement in their story. this book kinda reminds me of the maze runner and the purge into one. Its great and really suspenseful.

The perks of being a wallflower
 By Stephen Chbosky

4 stars ****
I would give this book 4 stars because its a really good book and never gets boring its also a really good treatment film.

setting- The setting takes place at a high school its all starts off with Charlie going to school and finding out his friend had killed himself. Charlie was having a hard time making friends until then he met "nothing,"

Main Characters-  The main Characters are Charlie, Sam, & Patrick

Charlie-  Charlie, is a 15 year old boy who just starting high school he just found out his best friend Michael had killed himself .Charlie feels left out of things and don't have any friends till he met a kid named "nothing" He directs the progression of the novel through the letters he writes to an unnamed "friend"; these letters describe Charlie's experiences in high school and at home.Charlie loves to read and often uses the framework of a classic novel to think and reflect upon his own life; he even hopes to become a writer at some point. His teacher Bill encourages him to develop these skills and repeatedly assigns Charlie extra books to read and additional writing exercises Charlie struggles with apparent mental illness throughout his letters.Charlie was sexually abused by his Aunt Helen when he was a child, but that he had internalized and concealed the abuse out of his love for her and as a result of his empathy for Aunt Helen's own problems as a child.

Sam- Sam, is a beautiful brown-haired, green-eyed girl who wins Charlie's affection from the first days of their friendship. She is the step-sister of Patrick and a close friend of Charlie's, and her conversations with Charlie both reveal information about Charlie's background and help Charlie to process and reflect upon his concerns. Sam assists Charlie in becoming more comfortable in his own skin, bringing him into her group of misfit and outcast friends, as well as encouraging him to participate more in society Charlie's fervent love for Sam, she is not interested in him at first: she believes she is too old for him, and she is also dating Craig, a young man who is beyond high school age. Yet Charlie has important insights on Sam and Craig's relationship, which falls apart when Craig is discovered cheating

Patrick- Patrick, at first introduced as "Nothing" from shop class, becomes one of Charlie's best friends. He is the flamboyant and extravagant step-brother of Sam. Patrick also helps Charlie feel more comfortable in high school and is always listening to him and giving him advice, whether regarding his family, the loss of his friend Michael Early in their relationship, Patrick and Charlie become closer friends when Patrick asks Charlie to keep a secret: Patrick is in a romantic relationship with Brad, the quarterback of the high school football team. Patrick and Brad have a violent fight at school, and Charlie comes to Patrick's defense, winning back the respect and admiration of his friends.

Main plot event-
-Charlie has many flashbacks about his Aunt Helen and it makes his life very hard. He's labeled freak and weird, almost immediately in his freshman year.
Charlie attends a school football. There he meets Sam and Patrick, who he at the time knew as 'Nothing'. Eventually, the three become the best of friends. Charlie also makes friends with Sam and Patrick's other friends, a group of wallflowers. A wallflower is a person who, because of shyness, unpopularity, or lack of a partner, remains at the side at a party or dance. Charlie fits right in with the group of seniors. The best part is that Charlie is finally happy and the flashbacks stop.It is around the same time that Charlie realizes he has quite the crush on the beautiful Sam. She tells Charlie that she's too old for him, and so he tries to move on and forget about his crush. Charlie eventually starts dating Mary Elizabeth, a very nice girl who helps out with a local play. Mary Elizabeth really loves Charlie, and she thinks Charlie feels the same. Though, he eventually comes to terms that he does not feel the same about her; he still has a thing for Sam.Later that month, the group is playing truth or dare. Charlie was dared to kiss the prettiest girl in the room. Everyone in the room was shocked when he kissed Sam. She tells Charlie to leave and not to come back until things cool down. Charlie loses his friends, and he loses his happiness. His flashbacks return and he starts to go downhill. Though Patrick still sort of hangs around, he misses all his friends.

Conflicts-   The conflicts in this book are all evolved around charlie. He goes through some really typical problems any high schooler goes through and than some things not everyone experiences. He struggles to fit in at first because other kids though he was weird because his best friend committed suicide and charlie was very emotional about that, and would break down crying on a lot of occasions.when he be friends himself with seniors in the school he is forced to grow up very fast and has to deal with drugs,& sex  he is exposed to all there of those on a consistent basis and often folds into a peer pressure he faced from his senior friends.Charlie also has conflicts at home such as death of his aunt and how it affected his family as a whole

Recommendation- I would recommend this book if you like curious, mistress,& adventure. I could say it like a treatment film but its a really good book I enjoyed reading it.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
    By Sherman Alexie

I give this book a ★★★½, because I think it has an interesting character and setting, and seeing poverty and oppression from the point of view of a Native American is a pretty eye opening read. But I think this book can be pretty annoying at times. The idea of the character going to a normal school instead of his reservation school is kind of hard to read knowing there is most likely some pretty hard times ahead.

    Setting:
The setting of the book is a Native American reservation, where the majority of the population is very poor. The main character Junior eventually goes to a predominantly white.

Characters: Junior, his family, Rowdy, Mr. P (So far)

    Events:
    1. Junior's dog is put down.
    2. Junior throws a textbook at his teacher Mr. P unintentionally, and gets suspended.
    3. Mr. P tells Junior to leave the reservation.
    4. Junior goes to an outside school.

    Explanation:
The main character Junior, was born with many issues. He had to much fluid in his head and had to immediately have surgery to remove it, this resulted in a lot of damage like, his head and feet were much bigger than the rest of his body, and his head can be hurt very easily, The main problem this caused was constant bullying.

    Conflict:
The conflict in the book is Junior is bullied and doubted for his disabilities, and racism because he is Native American. He wants to make his way in the world so he goes to a better school where he is doubted and bullied.

    Recommendation:
I personally think this book is pretty decent, I would recommend it to maybe someone who wants to read a unique and shorter book.

#1 Event: In the Beginning of the story all the kids turning 16 must take a test called the "Aptitude test" which determines which of the 5 factors the teen will have for life, the following factors she/he might get Dauntless, Abnegation, Amity, Candor, and Erudit

#2 Event: The choosing day is the day where all the kids choose what factor she/he must have for the rest of there life. if  she/he chooses a different factor they must never see or be with there family again.

#3 Event: In order to be a part of the faction they chose, the kids must do several initiation activities. If they fail to finish one of the exercises they will become "factorless", which means homeless.

Conflict: The main conflict in divergent with society and herself, this conflict is two things man vs man and man vs society. The conflict is a internal one.

The Devil In The White City
    Erik Larson

The time was the late 1800's were the industrial era was booming and city's were becoming massive. In the rising city of Chicago, The Worlds Fair was being built and in the shadows there was a killer.
Money was on everyone's minds everyone wanted to build a building and start a banking company, H.H. Holmes who was a mysterious figure wanted money in any way possible.

3.5 rating I give this out of 5 for the reason being that the story is very stretched making it very mundane but if you like very detailed books this is for you.
Holmes as a young man watched many people die and all he wanted was to be rich and powerful. He realized that after failing many times that he would need to do whatever he has to do to achieve his goal. During the World Fair is where he'd pray on victims to kill to take people out of business to give him a chance to make a extra buck.  The conflict within the story is external and even internal, Holmes can't stop killing people and he doesn't want to.  I recommend this book to anyone who likes long stories or true stories.

    3 Stars***

I gave it 3 stars because a most of the time the book is kind of confusing because you don't know whats going on, like one example is I didn't know that the main character was a girl until I read half the book, i thought that the main character was a boy.

    Setting:

This story started from Vermont which was were the girls parents lived but they were gone when she got there so she started walking to Canada because that's where she agreed to go if anything ever really bad happened, and as she take her long walk she meets another girl and they become friends after she helps here when she gets sick and they walk there together and once they get to Canada they live in this abandoned schoolhouse and they have a Lady that leaves theme food and supplies almost every day behind the barn.

    Main characters:

There are technically 2 main character but the second one doesn't come into the story until after 1/4th of the book. One of the main characters is Radley, and the other characters name if Cecilia.

    Radley:

Radley is the character you read about from the beginning of the book and she is a really friendly girl and she really misses her parent and most of the time that she walks in the story it talks about how she would treat her parents much better and become a much better child and she wont take anything for granted. I also noticed that she likes to make friends and its very easy for her to open up.

    Cecilia:

Cecilia doesn't come in to the story until after the first 1/4th of the book. one of the things that I noticed is that she doesn't really like to open up to people and shes kind of shy but at the same time tough and smart too. She has a dog names Jerry Lee and he is a very smart dog but Cecilia starts opening up more towards the second half of the book.

    Main Plot Events:

In the beginning of the story it starts off with Radley (the main character) arriving at the airport near Vermont. She just arrived from Haiti, she was there with a missionary helping kids like feeding them and building them homes and things like that. When she gets to the airport she waits for her parents but they never come so she ends up taking a long walk home from the airport and when she gets home her parents were not there and the house seems as if it was abandoned and she ends up leaving for Canada because that's where her parents told her to go if something bad ever happened, and in this case the President of America was killed, So now she is walking to Canada and when she is about half way there she gets a friend by helping her when she gets sick from not eating enough. At first this girl is very rude and doesn't really talk at all, but once they got to Canada they found a schoolhouse and there they became closer to each other. They also got this Lady and they call her the "Lady of the Barn" and she leaves them food and things they would need behind the barn. But they knew that they couldn't just live there forever so they went back into the United States and started a new life.

    Conflicts:

    • Internal conflict:

    • Radley is mad at herself about the way she treated her parents and how she was so ungrateful back then.

    • External conflict:
    • Radley and Cecilia are trying to stay from the police who are technically arresting a bunch of random people so they had to hide a lot.

    Recommendation:

I would recommend this book to people that like to read book about surviving and kind of adventure kind of books. This book has a lot parts where the main character, Radley talks to herself in her head about what she is going to do and things like that. In my opinion I didn't really like it because it's not really the type of book that I'm interested in.
